Importance of Staying in Care and Reasons Why People Miss Their Visits
Introduction
Retention, or staying in care, is important for people living with HIV to achieve viral suppression.
What’s the Problem?
• Interruptions in care can threaten your health and lead to new HIV transmissions.
What did the Experts Say About it?
• A study showed that patients with gaps in care were less likely to be virally suppressed than patients who regularly attended their appointments.
• In this study, gaps in care were connected to younger age, crack cocaine use, food/finance/housing issues, and phone number changes within the past year.
What Can You Do?
• Make sure to attend your appointments. Be aware if you or a friend may have issues making your appointments and make a plan.
Conclusion
We get it, stuff happens, but staying connected to care is important for your health, especially for people living with HIV. For more HIV news and stories, continue to stay informed through the “Gotta Know” section of the app.
